A total of 1,418 Alco RS-3 diesel-electrics were produced between May 1950 and August 1956 by Alco and its Canadian subsidiary, the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW). Of these 35 were delivered to the
Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad between 1950 and 1951.
Rock Island operated from 1852 to 1980.
