Metropolitan Railway, London, electric locomotive art

It suggests a climb through rural hills, which wasn't really the case. Date uncertain. See earlier posts on these.

cars in Melbourne, Australia, 1960s

From the Old Australian Shops FB page

There’s so much to love about this photo, the old tin shed, the Myer walkway bridge, and the classic cars. It was taken by Fred Mitchell in the 60s.

In the shadow of Melbourne’s grand GPO once stood “The Old Tin Shed,” a sweltering, cramped telegraph office turned tool shop that lasted more than 40 years. Though many saw it as an eyesore and debated its ownership, it managed to outlast countless calls for demolition.

That was until 1964, when Whelan the Wrecker finally brought it down, with pleasure.
In its place now stands a sleek glass postal centre, a far cry from the humble shed it replaced.

Also featured is the Myer pedestrian bridge, completed in 1963. Designed by Tomkins, Shaw & Evans, it spans Little Bourke Street, linking the Myer department store with what is now Emporium Melbourne. It was built to streamline shopper movement and remains a key part of the city’s retail landscape.

NZ Midland Line art

A painting by Kelvin McMillan who says it is based on a photo taken at Annat, although there must have been a telephoto lens involved. "I am proud to say that this painting is now hanging in the Beehive [NZ's government executive building] along with another of my favourite Canterbury paintings."

Southwest Airlines to require passengers using mobile phone chargers to keep them in full sight

According to the New York Post, the airline is implementing the new restriction on portable chargers to keep these notoriously incendiary devices from bursting into flame mid-flight.

Starting May 28, passengers will be required to keep their power banks in plain sight, making the budget carrier the first to roll out a policy of this kind. “Using portable charging devices while stored in a bag or overhead bin will no longer be permitted,” a Southwest spokesperson told Business Insider. “Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of its customers and employees.”

The airlines will, however, allow passengers to keep the devices in their carry-on bags when not in use.

NZ's 'Southerner' train from Christchurch to Dunedin is returning

It ceased running in January 2002, in fact the two of us based in Wellington were among the last passengers on the train which ran all the way from Christchurch to Invercargill -- but the latter part of the journey is not part of the resurrection.

Renfe class 279 Bo-Bo type electric locomotive

An HO scale model made by Electrotren.

The class 279 or class 7900 according to the old RENFE numbering comprised16 units delivered in 1967 and 1968. Like the 289 class, it served to address the problem of the coexistence of 1,500 V DC lines and 3,000 V DC lines, since at that time electrification varied depending on the area. This series was a dual-voltage locomotive, sometimes referred to as a universal locomotive due to its ability to operate on any electrified RENFE line .

The 279 series had a single 2,750 kW engine, and double-reducer bogies which allowed it to operate with different characteristics depending on whether it was used for passenger or freight trains. The maximum speed offered was 130 km/h for passenger trrain and 80 km/h for freight.

All were withdrawn by mid 2009 and 3 are preserved.

NZR Ec electric locomotive at Heathcote

The length says this is a suburban train from Lyttelton to Christchurch and not a boat train from a ferry,  One notes the runaway track on the left to protect the single track in the tunnel.  The era of electric trains ended in 1970, see the book Railway Electrification in Australia and New Zealand.
