The "Blauwe Engel" was a series of Dutch diesel-electric trainsets that was used by the NS from 1953 to 1998. The name was derived from the bright blue color that these trainsets initially had. A connection with the famous feature film
Der blaue Engel from 1930 has often been suggested, but never established. When new colors for diesel trains were introduced around 1960, the nickname became "Red Devils". As the livery in this artwork is the latter, it should be called "Rode Duivel"?
