'La Bella' blown ashore at Owhiro Bay, Wellington, 1904

A photo taken on 15 October 1904 by George Leslie Adkin of the sailing ship La Bella, blown ashore on Wellington's south coast, no doubt during one of Wellington's notorious fierce southerlies.  Although it looks serious, the ship was quickly refloated.  A seaman drowned in the incident and the ship's master was charged with manslaughter.   There have been other similar events; see our books.
