This was the first ship to be named after the river in Otaki for the New Zealand Shipping Company in 1875. Built at Jarrow, for world trading, she was made of iron and is shown at Picton harbour around 1877.
She was sold to German interests around 1885 and lasted another ten years before being beached at Trinidad.
This painting completes the series of the four ships owned by NZS with this name, the only place in New Zealand to have so many ships named after the river and district. The other three oil paintings have all been sold, this one is available. Oil on stretched canvas block 16" x 20" by Wallace Trickett.
