The single bore, double track railway tunnel between Modane in France and Bardonecchia in Italy, under Mt Cenis, also known as the Fréjus Tunnel, was opened on 19 September 1871, at the time the world's longest tunnel. This status remained until 1 June 1882, with the opening of the 15 km Gotthard railway tunnel in Switzerland.
In 1881, to protect the tunnel entrance on the French side against landslides, it was lengthened by more than a kilometre and the total length of the tunnel increased from 12.2 km to 13.64 km. Until 1980, shuttles to transport cars were put into service in the winter. This service ceased with the opening in July 1980 of the Fréjus road tunnel. See earlier post.
