ship S.S. 'Kent' berthed at Wellington wharves, circa 1911


The SS Kent was a four-masted steamer of 5464 grt built in 1899 by Messrs Hawthorne Leslie & Company of Newcastle-On-Tyne for the Federal Steam Navigation Company Limited. She had extensive refrigerated cargo capacity, and good accommodation for immigrants, and was used to carry troops to the South African War. She was sold in 1915 to the Union Cold Storage Company, which later became the Blue Star Line, and renamed Brodlea; in 1920 renamed Saxon Star.  She was broken up in Italy in 1934.

Also involved with the rescue of 45 passengers off the Italian liner 'Ancona' ,many women and children from the USA .Ship was torpedoed by U 38 off North Africa on November 7th 1915, which caused an international incident. 383 souls were lost and may have brought USA into WW1 earlier along with the sinking of Lusitania.. .
