Victorian Railways S class diesel, Australia

This was a class of 18 Co-Co type diesel-electrics built by Clyde Engineering between 1957 and 1961, of which 10 were for the broad gauge network and 8 for the standard gauge line between Melbourne and Sydney which was fully completed in 1962.

The S was a local version of the EMD F7 and similar in appearance to the double ended B class from 1952, without the second end.  VR withdrawals began in 1984 (other than the 2 wrecked in the Violet Town disaster of 1969), but only 6 have been scrapped in total.  Despite looking rather battered here, this one, S312, is still used.

The prime mover was the EMD V16 567C; Length 18.72 metres (61 ft 5 in); Weight 116 tonnes

I love the S Class diesel, it is such a magnificent looking engine in the VR blue and gold livery and just look amazing when on the rails!
