Parisienne with a bicycle, circa 1942


One of the photos taken by French Wehrmacht photographer André Zucca.  Private motoring was banned because of a gasoline shortage so public transport and bicycles were the means most had of getting around.

No doubt the photo was intended to show one of the attractions of Paris for members of the Wehrmacht, although women who fraternised with Germans were punished for it after liberation, including by having their hair publicly cut off. (In many cases where real romance was involved this would have been quite unjust).
