This invasion did not just consist of ANZAC troops, but British and French and was at the time the largest amphibian landing in history. However, as the first action that the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps or ANZACs experienced in the war, it has a special significance for both countries and 25 April became the official veterans day in A/NZ and has been commemorated ever since 1916.
Like the Western Front, it was trench warfare and a constant scene of slaughter with minimal territory gain, and by August it was apparent to British High Command that Winston Churchill's poorly considered plan was futile, yet the withdrawal did not occur until December.
