new book 'New Zealand Railway Memorabilia' publishing next Monday
This book is intended to celebrate 150 years of New Zealand railways and was planned for release last October, but the appearance of Penguin's grand 150 Years of Rail in New Zealand that month forced a delay to allow it time to disappear off shop shelves. The actual anniversary year was 2013, but the Penguin book was likewise delayed--by the pending opening of the Auckland system electrification last year, which it could hardly omit.
Compiler Geoff Churchman says this is the last book on NZ railways from transpress nz. "We've published and co-published 22 books on them since 1988 and feel that there is little that hasn't been covered that there is a need for, with the exception of a comprehensive reference to non-NZR locomotives--and no-one has shown the interest and dedication to research and write one.
"This book is as much about popular culture and iconography as it is about the railways as such, and as well as old printed items like postcards, posters and brochures, includes things like NZR crockery, railway houses, tools of the trade plus of course, a good selection of previously unpublished photos."
The book has 80 colourful pages in A4 format and is a special limited numbered edition of only 1,000 copies.
