According to reports the quakes have emanated from a fault system about 30 km east of Seddon (Marlborough) and 11 km deep in the Cook Strait/Pacific Ocean area and don't involve the main continental plate fault that runs north-south through Wellington. The main one today occurred at 5:09 pm and is rated at 6.5.
It seems from initial reports that damage, other than things knocked off shelves, involves some cracked building render and broken glass.
