roll-on roll-off rail ferries at Puttgarden, Germany, 1960s

On the island of Fehmarn, Puttgarden is as far as rails reach on the German stage of the journey called the Vogelfluglinie or Birds Flight Line between Hamburg and Copenhagen. This terminal was built over 1961-1963 and the photo probably dates from shortly after opening.  An 18 km stretch of water is involved between here and Rødby Færge on the island of Lolland in Denmark, which is traversed by ferries. A tunnel/bridge is planned to replace the ferry service by 2018.
