where you can't go on the Otago Central rail trail
We mentioned the Otago Rail Trail in connection with the new "flick-lit" book from Penguin last week. This picture dated 1962 was taken on the part of the Otago Central line that went through the scenic Cromwell Gorge -- this was flooded once the hydro power dam near Cromwell (one of PM Robert Muldoon's "Think Big" projects) was finally completed at the beginning of the 1990s.
Colour pictures of this railway line are in the book New Zealand 1950s Steam in Colour.
A full history with lots of other pics is on the Mighty Clutha blog.
