the Southern Pacific Shasta route

At first sight it could almost be mistaken for Mt Taranaki (8,261 ft/ 2,518 metres), but at 14,179 ft/4,322 metres, Mt Shasta in the north of California is quite a bit higher and larger.  These postcards use the mountain as a backdrop for Southern Pacific steam trains, the second features the Cantara Loop, an impressively tortuous trajectory about 2 miles south of the town of Mt Shasta - a website on it here

Nowadays the route is part of the Union Pacific system.
