loading mail onto a train, Australia, circa 1950

Another photo found among postcards for sale - we think this is Melbourne and from the look of it, a publicity pose.

a real or fictitious Romanian electric multiple unit?

The postmark says something about 50 years of railway employees struggles.

According to the lists on railfaneurope.net, while the 55 class designation was allocated for EMU sets, there has been only one, introduced in 1990 as a prototype and now withdrawn.  Some second-hand SNCF electric multiple units have been recently acquired.

The stamp illustration description says it is a 4000 hp diesel-electric set.

Santa Fe F units over Cajon Pass 50 years ago

No less than nine F7 units are pulling this Chief passenger train - four A units and five B units, which seems excessive for a passenger train.

Milano Centrale station, Italy

Milan Central station is the second largest in Italy and traffic volume is about 600 trains per day. It has 24 tracks, two subway lines and is the terminus of several bus and tram lines. It is used every day by more than 320 thousand people, a total of 120 million per year. It is located in Piazza Duca d'Aosta, between Piazza Luigi di Savoia and Piazza IV Novembre, in the city center.

The design plans were approved in 1924, but with the changing political climate there were changes and a reorganization of decorative choices. Among the notable variants was the choice of semi-circular large steel and glass platform halls. The main arch height reaches 72 metres and is the largest built in Italy. The canopies can reach a length of 341 metres, covering an area of 66,500 square metres. The station was finally opened in May 1931.

Presumably a reference to the bus. Optare is based in Leeds, England.

1957 Cadillac adverts

Those flowing evening gowns beloved by Cadillac's advertising agency in those days are quite entertaining now.  You wonder what the "Pump Room" in the hotel was for.

merging of State Highways 1 and 2, Ngauranga, Wellington

No, this isn't intended as motorway porn for Steven Joyce types, but to provide a comparison shot for one taken 50 years ago in approximately the same location (without the foliage) in the book Wellington Transport Memories.

electric trams of Arnhem, Netherlands

the greatest extent of the system (wikimedia)

The electric tram system around this city was created on lines of the old horse tram system (in kaapspor or cape gauge) in 1911 by De Gemeente Electrische Tram Arnhem (GETA).  By the late 1930s there were plans to replace the trams with trolleybuses, but WW2 delayed this.  What stopped the trams was the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944 (the subject of the movie A Bridge too Far) and the equipment that wasn't destroyed in the battle and the rails were sold after the war.
