Cotton Belt GP40M-2 heads an autorack train in Arizona
The loco dates from 1971, but looks to have been freshly shopped and repainted in this view. The GP40-2 was a turbocharged Bo-Bo type with a 16 cylinder EMD 645E3 prime mover rated at 3000 hp output power. A total of 1143 units were built to 1986.

The reason for the fresh paint is because this unit is a rebuild by Morrison-Knudsen in 1990. Cotton Belt units were numbered #7274-7293: the #7280 started life as Western Pacific #3538.
