NSB Di 4 on the Nordland line, Norway

Five of these Co-Co type diesel-electrics were built by Henschel for the NSB over 1980-1981 and used to haul passenger trains on the Nordland Line. Since 2001 they have been the only revenue diesel locomotives used by NSB.

They had electric components from Brown, Boveri & Cie and a 16-645E prime mover from EMD giving a power output of 2,450 kW (3,290 hp).

They were ordered in the late 1970s as a supplement to and later replacement of the Di 3. The class is technically similar to Denmark's DSB ME class; it was planned to have commonalities with NSB's electric El 17 locomotives, but this was stopped. The Di 4 was the first NSB locomotive to have three-phase asynchronous traction motors, and was the world's first asynchronous locomotive in revenue service. A second batch was planned for later in the 1980s, but the order was never placed.
