The station was opened in 1889, still in use. Electrification took place in 1926. If it looks French, it was inspired by the French metre-gauge departmental railways and some of the initial rolling stock was French. It is on the the formerly 140 km long Linha do Vouga, the only metre-gauge line still in use in Portugal.
In 1990, the 79 km long section of Sernada do Vouga to Viseu was closed, reducing the line to about 61 km between Espinho and Sernada.
