The SD40-2 from EMD, 3,000 hp Co-Co diesel-electric locomotives, were a long-time major workhorse of North American railroads. Rio Grande's roster included 73 of the tunnel motor variant where the air intakes were at the rear and at deck level where air was supposedly cooler. More on them here
