In 1970, six members of the D
A class - locomotives 1400-04 and 1406 - were withdrawn from mainline duties and reassigned as heavy shunters to work in the new Te Rapa hump yard north of Hamilton. They received additional low speed controls and were reclassified as the D
AA class. These units received gold stripes to differentiate them from other D
As. They were later replaced by D
SG and D
