Saint Jean Pied de Port is at the foot of the French Pyrénées not far from Spain and is the traditional starting point for the 800 km pilgrimage walk known as the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, the popularity of which has grown significantly in recent years and was the subject of the 2009 movie The Way starring Martin Sheen. The town is the terminus of a branch line from Bayonne which follows the river Nive (Geoff Churchman pic).
