"I've never really understood religion
except that it seems a good excuse to kill"
- from 'Religion' by Alvin Lee of Ten Years After
While the Muslims' terrorist attacks in most countries have been designed to further their political objectives, that on the island of Bali in Indonesia on 12 October 2002 seems to have been primarily designed to punish the Balinese for practicing a different religion (Hindu) to the rest of the country. The bombing of Bali nightclubs was clearly intended to wreck their livelihood by turning foreign tourists away. As well as the 202 killed, including 88 Australians and 3 New Zealanders, hundreds more people suffered horrific burns and other injuries.
Some of the perpetrators were arrested, although media reports showed them laughing with their captors. Indonesian authorities were, however, aware of the damage that this and other incidents had done to the country's image and actively hunted down those involved, resulting in death sentences for the worst offenders and long jail terms for others. The authorities have also been active in surveillance of terrorist cells there since.
One positive outcome of the incident is that it alerted Australians to the danger posed by Muslims in their midst and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has since closely watched them in Australia, foiling several of their plots. One of the worst examples of an illegal Muslim immigrant and terrorist plotter was Abdul Nacer Benbrika. Another foiled Muslim terrorist plot in Australia last December is reported here.
