Canberra, Australia, was built as the new Federal City in the 1920s. The first public omnibus service in the Canberra
area was begun by the Commonwealth Department of Works in October 1923 for the benefit of workers constructing buildings. The service originated from construction camps and ‘tent cities’ at the
Causeway and
Pialligo, and the temporary railhead at
Eastlake (Kingston), and two charabancs carried people to the various building sites in Civic Centre and
Parkes.
