Canadian National's 'Super Continental' passenger train in the Rockies, 1960s

A 1960s postcard showing this train near Jasper, hauled by EMD FP9's.  This train was introduced on 24 April 1955 as a competitor to Canadian Pacific's The Canadian.  However, the train paled in comparison to The Canadian's consist of stainless steel Budd cars.  As a feature of The Canadian was its dome cars which gave great views through the Rockies, in 1964 CN acquired a set of six ex-Milwaukee Road "Super Dome" cars (renamed "Sceneramics" by CN) that had formerly seen service on the Olympian Hiawatha. These were placed into service between Winnipeg and Vancouver.

The Super Continental lost money but lasted as a CN train until the Via Rail era began on 1 April 1978, which continued it until 1981.
