Methven, 1950

No particular reason for posting this except that it looks nice. A view by Whites Aviation looking northwest towards the Southern Alps along what is now Methven Chertsey Road towards the town centre, intersected by what is now State Highway 77. On the left foreground side of this intersection can be seen the former terminus of the Methven branch line, coming in next to the road from the bottom left. This was a standard rural branch, but which survived a bit longer than many others, not being closed until 1976. For more, see our books.

A blog begun by one of our readers who builds models of NZR prototypes. His current project is building a model of a Fiat railcar (officially these were known simply as 'articulated railcars' but they are also referred to by most fans as 'Fiat railcars' and by a few as 'Drewry railcars') from the mid-1950s. The pic above by Jack Creber is of a Greymouth bound Fiat at Aickens on the West Coast in August 1962.

An S.C. Smith photo showing the same buildings as in the previous post, but looking the other direction. Double deck tram number 51 approaches the Newtown terminus where two single deck trams can be seen.

Looking north showing the then Post Office and St Thomas Anglican Church, neither of which exists now. It seems the tinter thought Wellington's trams were green.
