Loaded coal wagons descend the Rewanui Incline with the tank loco visible acting as a brake. Coal mining around Rewanui commenced in 1901 although the terminus of the railway branch,13 km from Greymouth opened in 1914. It closed in 1985. Liverpool 1,2 and 3 started in 1913 and closed in 1984. Mount Davy commenced in 1997 closing just one year later in 1998 after the death of three miners .The Spring Creek mine commenced in 2000 but this last underground mine ceased production in 2014 and was sealed in 2017 following the liquidation of Solid Energy NZ. The site, known for high-quality bituminous coal, is currently subject to proposals for a smaller, modernized reopening to produce coal for the silicon metal market. (Wilson Lythgoe pic)
