Seen here on the Evans Bay Patent Slipway of Wellington, Tamahine was built especially for the Wellington-Picton service. The ship made on average 6 crossing of Cook Strait per week compared to the present Kaitaki and Aratere which make on average 40 crossings per week. She was also used on special weekend cruises to the Marlborough Sounds. Replacement took the form of the rail ferry Aramoana in August 1962 by which time it was estimated she had made 15,000 crossings of Cook Strait.
