tram at South Head lighthouse, Sydney, 1900s
The South Head Upper Lighthouse, called the Macquarie Lighthouse on Dunbar Head, Vaucluse (about 2 km or 1.25 miles south of South Head) near the entrance to Sydney Harbour, is still there, the tram line on Old South Head Road isn't.
South Head Upper Light was the first and is the longest serving lighthouse site in Australia. There has been a navigational aid in this vicinity since 1791 and a lighthouse near the present site since 1818. The current lighthouse was completed in 1883.
The tower was built of sandstone, 26 metres (85 ft) high, and the focal height of the light is 105 metres (344 ft). It was automated in 1976.
