No date or location. E81 was one of two 70-ton, 3,000 Volt steeple cabs that the Milwaukee Road bought from Alco with General Electric electrical gear in 1917 to switch (shunt) in mainline yards. In total the railroad acquired 5 electric switchers, all built by GE-Alco. Except for one, they lasted until the end of the Milwaukee Road's electrification in 1974. The fifth switcher worked out of Great Falls, Montana, an ES-1 class which was retired around 1939. This one was a little different in that it operated at 1500 Volts, and was considerably smaller.
