Coahuila y Zacatecas narrow gauge diesel, Mexico, 1965
Unit 802, an EMD GA8, at Carneros. These 65 tonne switchers were a version of the GL8 intended for for extremely sharp curves and a low weight per axle. All 94 units were built for export from the U.S. between 1962 and 1967. Their prime mover was an EMD 567C rated at 875 hp (652 kW). The Ferrocarril Coahuila y Zacatecas was a 3 ft gauge Mexican short line that served a large copper mine and smelter at Concepcion del Oro, Zacatecas. The main line stretched 126 km (78 miles) from a connection with the NdeM at Saltillo to Concepcion del Oro. This line was later merged into the NdeM, and after some relocations was converted to standard gauge in the 1970s and shortened to connect to the NdeM at Gomez Farias as Linea BG to Concepcion del Oro, the station actually named Margarita.
