the Anschluss of 2014
Viewed from a distance of several thousand miles, it was very hard to fathom why Ukrainians felt that good relations with the European Union and good relations with Russia were mutually exclusive options, but that's clearly what all the protests were about: most of the country wanted the former, but the Crimea, with an overwhelming linguistic and ethnic Russian majority, wanted the latter. Despite the arrogant 'we'll do as we we please' stance from Putin and all the hypocritical 'holier than thou' pontificating from western leaders, the solution that Russia has pursued seems the best one at this stage. Hopefully all will now settle down and it will prove to be the case.
