Taumarunui on the Main Trunk Line
A postcard view taken after the present 1970s station was built, but the 4-wheel wagons still date it quite a lot. It is about half way between Wellington and Auckland and was a long time train control centre. It's best known, however, for the Peter Cape folk song with the above title, which is detailed with more info, vid and pics here
A general belief is that the song was based on fact, in other words Peter Cape got a job on night trains so he could spend 10 minutes each trip with a girl in the Refreshment Rooms there, but his daughter has told us that story is bunkum.
