Southern Pacific SD45T-2R 'tunnel motor'

Seen on the Donner Pass route, no date.   Between April 1986 and December 1989 about half the original 247 SD45T-2's were rebuilt and designated as SD45T-2R.

As with the SD40T-2 units, the intake for radiator cooling air was moved to the walkway level and the cooling fans were under the radiator cores, instead of above.  The air intake grills at the lower rear of the locomotives' long hoods were intended to bring cool and clean air into the radiator section.  The SD45T-2's had a longer hood than the SD40T-2's to accommodate a V20 rather than V16 prime mover.
