early Utrecht trams, Netherlands

This system began in the horse tram era in 1879 using Kapspur (3'6") gauge and was electrified in the 1900s with 600 Volts DC, the common voltage used for trams, with the first electric tram running from Centraal Station to Vaaltbrug in 1906.  Buses began replacing the trams in the late 1930s; interrupted by WW2, this process was complete in 1949, when the tram line between Utrecht and Zeist ceased, replaced with buses.

In 1983 a new Sneltram or fast tram line was opened, a separate post about that soon.
