early Haarlem electric trams, Netherlands

outside the railway station

In 1894 the Eerste Nederlandsche Electrische Tram Maatschappij (ENET) was founded with cars built by Beijnes and became the first Dutch electric tram, which ran from Haarlem to Zandvoort from 1899 to 1957 when it was the last tram line. The system around Haarlem consisted of two sub-networks: one with standard gauge (1435 mm. gauge) and one using metre gauge.  In 1904 the route Amsterdam - Haarlem was inaugurated, a line with a length of 19.4 km and a track gauge of 1000 mm. As Amsterdam was standard gauge, on part of it a three rail track was used for the two gauges.
