railways and shipping at Greymouth

What is the major commodity of the West Coast?  This pic gives you the answer.  The scene belongs to history, however, as coastal shipping is a thing of the past in Greymouth.  This shows loaded coal wagons on the riverside wharves and behind them the Union Steam Ship Company freighter Kokiri, 2,470 gross register tons, which was in the company's fleet from 1951 to 1968.  For more, see the book New Zealand Maritime Images: the golden years.
