That's not much in world terms, you might say, and it isn't. However, while the million took over 160 years, the third half-million has only taken about 12 years. If the growth continues at that rate there will be major infrastructure strains. Auckland is already one of the world's most spread out cities relative to its population and Steven Joyce wants to build more motorways to spread it out even more. Oh dear.
One of the positive features of Wellington is that is has an identifiable and vibrant concentration in a central hub; Auckland doesn't. See an earlier post about the negative experience in America about spreading big cities outwards instead of concentrating people in the centre.
