the Thonon-les-Bains Funicular

The short Funiculaire de Thonon-les-Bains in the spa town of Thonon-les-Bains (Haute-Savoie) links the Belvedere, in the city centre, to the port of Rives on the shore of Lake Geneva. It was opened in 1888 and has been renovated twice, first in 1951 then again in 1989-1990 since when the line has been fully automated.  At the time of opening the cabins were made of wood and despite the short trip were in two classes. It operated by means of a counterweight hydraulic system. In 1956 it was converted to electricity. The first pic is from 1966, the second from 2008.
