Today Cambodia has 612 km (380 miles) of metre gauge (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) railways, consisting of two lines originally constructed during the time when the country was part of French Indochina (1863 -1953).
These stamps would date from the period 1960-1969 when the line running from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville on the southern coast, to cut down the reliance on the Saigon port of Vietnam and Khlong Toei port of Thailand, was being built with the assistance of France and West Germany. In 1960, Australia provided four 3rd class passenger carriages under the Colombo Plan.
