British Railway icons
A 150th anniversary postcard issued in 1980 to mark the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway on 15 September 1830. This was the world's first inter-city passenger railway in which all the trains were timetabled and hauled for most of the distance solely by steam locomotives.
The creators of this scene decided to show an Anglo-French Golden Arrow steam passenger train (see earlier post) and a class 52 diesel-hydraulic of which 74 were built from 1961 to 1964 (fitted with Maybach MD655 64.5-litre prime movers, 2,000 hp output at rail, axle arrangement C-C).
