The old station was renovated in an operation that was completed in 2005. A new building was constructed in the same area some metres further along, but separate, using the same platform. In addition, docks were built along an esplanade of the new building for the new bus service station in the city. Almería station thus became the first 'intermodal' rail station in Spain.
