Paekakariki rail action, early 1960s


We've mentioned that few women are interested in transport and technology, but in the early 1960s, these two photos appeared on the inside front covers of NZ Women's Weekly issues (for many years every issue had a "looking at NZ" scenic picture there.)

The first from July 1962 shows a DG-hauled short goods train approaching Paekakariki from the south, and the second from May 1963 shows the yard with a nice collection of steam locomotives visible; four years later they would be gone.  Today this area is the base of Steam Incorporated and there is a museum of the settlement in the station building.
