Lodz trams, Poland, 20th century

Traffic on the main street of Piotrkowska early 20th century.

A scene on the same street in 1931.

Scenes from the late 1930s.

After the Nazi invasion in 1939 the city's name (transliterated) was retained for about 18 months.

In 1941 it was renamed Litzmannstadt after a early Nazi member who died before the war.

1960

1964

Probably 1970s.

The meter-gauge electric system has been in existence since 1898 and presently there are 24 tramlines with a total route length of 124.1 km (77.1 miles).

Actually the Nazis renamed Lodz Litzmannstadt after the German general who captured the city in World War 1 when Poland was part of Russia.
