The first two routes, totaling 7.5 km in length, opened to the public at the beginning of 1890. Eight more routes were added between 1895 and 1928 but then the network slowly disappeared between 1933 and 1956. The final Clermont tram ran on the 17 March 1956, before being replaced by a bus route. In many places, the rails were simply paved over rather than being removed.
But 50 years later a new tramway was opened, a tramline, called Line A, that serves 34 stations and runs on 15.7 km (9.8 miles) of double track length. However, there have been numerous plans for extension of the line, and for the system to expand to include other lines, B and C
