Gütschbahn poster, Switzerland, circa 1900

This is a 173-metre (originally 162-metre) long funicular between Baselstrasse in Luzern (Lucerne) at an altitude of 441 metres and Hotel Gütsch at an altitude of 519 metres. It was opened in 1884 and extended at the lower end in 1897.  Originally two parallel tracks operated by water ballast, it was changed to power operation in 1960.

In 2008 the operation ceased, but in a referendum the citizens of Luzern agreed to pay for a replacement and it was converted by the cable car company Inauen-Schätti into 2 parallel inclined elevators. The new railway was opened on 26 September last year.
