A Ford Model AA truck and an Essex car. What was that structure in the left background used for - a radio mast?

It is the tower next to the fire station. Presumably where the bell was rung from maybe? And maybe where the hoses were hung to dry? In this picture - http://christchurchcitylibraries.com/Heritage/Photos/Disc5/IMG0012.jpg - is the 1926 Leyland fire engine which remained at the station until 1960 and is now at Ferrymead fire museum. I have driven that one.
