ferry 'Stena Alegra' begins 6-month service on Cook Strait run to replace the 'Aratere'

The Aratere lost a propeller in Cook Strait last November, putting her out of action except for freight service, and causing big business losses for owners KiwiRail.

The Stena Alegra ferry, which normally does the Gdynia (Poland) to Karlskrona (Sweden) run and was blown aground in ferocious winds in the Baltic Sea in October 2013, will be the temporary replacement for the stricken Aratere. The 21,000 gross tonne (approx) ferry had its first NZ revenue voyage today and will stay for 6 months while the Aratere is fixed.  TV3 News story and video
