the SS 'Scotia' 1921-1940

The S.S. Scotia was built by William Denny and Brothers in Dumbarton and launched in 1921 for the London & North Western Railway (L. & N.W.R.) ferry service between Holyhead and Dublin with a crew predominantly from Anglesey.

At the beginning of WW2 the ship was commandeered by the Admiralty for use as a transport ship  and kept the same name (with the SS replaced by HM for His Majesty) and the same crew, but with the addition of some men from the Royal Navy.

The Scotia was involved in the Dunkirk evacuation but was sunk by enemy action, resulting in an estimated 330 on board losing their lives, 28 of them crew members.
