the 'South Steyne' ferry, Sydney

The S.S. South Steyne is a 224 ft (70 metre) long steamship, the world's largest operational steam ferry. Built in Leith, Scotland for the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Company, the South Steyne was launched on 1 April 1938 and on 7 July that year steamed the 22,000 km to Australia, arriving on 19 September. The South Steyne has been an icon of Sydney since 1938. As the famous Manly ferry, it crossed between Circular Quay and Manly over 100,000 times over its 36 years, carrying well in excess of 92 million passengers.  Today it is a floating restaurant based in Darling Harbour.  More info here

Geoff Churchman, who took this pic, says that this is the best view that can be got from dry land; he was hoping the maintenance barge in the foreground would enable a better shot but there was no-one around operating it.
